Dental Hygienists
The main task of dental hygienists is to perform basic dental procedures, the most popular of which is oral prophylaxis or cleaning the teeth and gums. They remove soft and hard deposits in between teeth and gums diagnose for periodontal diseases. Dental hygienists specialize in preventive oral health. They diagnose and examine a person’s teeth and gums to record any abnormalities or presence of disease. They also help explain to their patients the best way to brush their teeth and to floss. Sometimes they use teeth models to help explain oral hygiene techniques to their patients. They also perform root planning as a periodontal therapy. They also apply cavity-preventative agents such as fluorides and pit and fissure sealants.
Dental hygienists are trained to use an assortment of tools to perform dental procedures. It is very important for them to have a good manual dexterity to perform the dental procedures well. They use a variety of hand and rotary instruments for cleaning and polishing teeth. With these devices they are able to remove stains, plaque and tartar. They are also trained to work on x-ray machines and perform a dental x-ray when needed by the patient. They can both take the pictures and develop the film. Working inside a person’s mouth gives them very little room for error. Their vision should also be almost perfect and they should always maintain good personal hygiene because they will be working in close proximity to patients.
What is the difference between dental hygienists and dentists? Apparently, dental hygienists are only licensed to perform basic dental procedures. They did not have the extensive education most dentists have. However, their education is more than enough to perform basic dental procedures and they are usually supervised by a dentist. The dental procedures that dental hygienists can perform are limited, however, it all depends on the state in which they practice. Some states allow dental hygienists to administer anesthesia while others do not. Some States also allow hygienists to perform dental procedures like placing filling materials, temporary fillings, and periodontal dressings. Some also allow them to remove sutures and smooth and polish metal restorations.
